5 Key AEO Metrics Content Teams Should Track (and How to Measure Them)

SEO taught teams to measure rankings, clicks, and traffic.

AI search forces a new question:

Are you included in the answer?

If you don’t measure that, you’ll be guessing while competitors get recommended.

The 5 AEO metrics

  1. Citation count
  2. Share of voice (by prompt/topic)
  3. Prompt coverage rate
  4. Mention quality (accuracy + framing)
  5. Business impact proxy (directional)

Metric 1: Citation count

What it is: how often your brand or site is cited across a defined prompt set.

Why it matters: it’s the most direct “visibility volume” signal.

How to measure: keep a stable prompt list and track weekly/monthly.

Metric 2: Share of voice (SOV)

What it is: your % of mentions/citations vs competitors across a prompt cluster.

Why it matters: AEO is a share game. You don’t need 100%. You need to win the prompts that matter.

How to measure: your mentions ÷ total mentions (you + competitors).

Metric 3: Prompt coverage rate

What it is: % of prompts where you show up at all.

Why it matters: coverage tells you whether you’re even in the shortlist.

How to improve: consolidate, add atomic answers, add FAQs, fill gaps.

Metric 4: Mention quality

What it is: how you’re described—accurately, positively, and in the right context.

Track:

  • Incorrect facts (pricing, features, policies)
  • Framing (“budget pick” vs “premium”)
  • Missing key differentiators

This is where brand risk lives.

Metric 5: Business impact proxy

AI attribution is messy. But you can still track directional signals:

  • AI referral traffic (where available)
  • Branded search lift
  • Direct traffic shifts
  • Self-reported “we found you via ChatGPT”
  • Assisted conversions (directional)

The goal isn’t perfect attribution. It’s confidence.

How to set a baseline (without overthinking it)

Start with:

  • 25 prompts for your core category (high intent)
  • 25 prompts for “best / vs / alternatives”
  • 25 prompts for how-to and use cases

Re-run weekly. Summarize monthly.

Consistency beats sophistication.

A simple monthly AEO report (1 page)

  • What changed (SOV, coverage, citations)
  • What we did (content shipped, refreshed, mentions earned)
  • What we learned (which formats win)
  • What we’ll do next (top 5 actions)

Common traps

  • Changing prompts constantly (you lose comparability)
  • Only checking one platform (visibility is fragmented)
  • Treating a single run as truth (answers drift)
  • Tracking quantity without quality (mentions can be wrong)

Where Meridian fits
